Modernization is having a huge and negative impact on the earth. Deforestation, loss of habitat, plastic in the oceans, global warming and rising sea-levels to name just a few. Similarly, modern life styles can have detrimental effects on our skin. Air pollution, solar radiation, blue light from gadgets, prolonged use of antibiotics and steroids, exposure to synthetic chemicals in cosmetics and skincare products, use of antiseptics, scrubbing habits, and excessive skincare all contribute to changes in the skin’s microbiome composition. The resulting imbalance in the skin’s natural state weakens the skin’s defensive barriers leading to a variety of new and more complex skin disorders that are occurring earlier and lasting longer.

In the past, teenage facial skin problems were limited to acne and adult skin problems were mostly to do with spots. Now, however, blackheads, pimples, dull skin, spots, dry cheeks, and oils in the T-zone can be experienced by anyone, whatever their age. Our skin is described as being sensitive, easily irritated, prone to eczema, susceptible to allergies and masks. Modern skin suffers from stress, otherwise known as ‘skinxiety’.
